Nestled in the heart of the Iowa River Valley, Marengo is just 30 miles southwest of Cedar Rapids, 30 miles west of Iowa City, and 7 miles north of Exit 216 on Interstate 80.  With a population of 2,535 (2000 census), Marengo is proud of its "small town" atmosphere.  However, there are available a wide variety of shopping, dining and recreational activities, including some of the best hunting and fishing in the state of Iowa.

Incorporated in July 1859, Marengo has served as the county seat of Iowa County since August  1845.  The city was named due to its resemblance to a plain in Italy where Napoleon fought and won the Battle of Marengo in 1800.  For many years, Marengo was the commercial center of Iowa County due to its proximity to the Iowa River, which forms the northern boundary of the city.  We hope that you enjoy your visit to our website and look forward to meeting you in person soon!
