A Few Words About Us
Nestled in the heart of the Iowa River Valley, Marengo is just 30 miles southwest of Cedar Rapids, 30 miles west of Iowa City, and 7 miles north of Exit 216 on Interstate 80. With a population of 2,535 (2000 census), Marengo is proud of its "small town" atmosphere. However, there's a wide variety of shopping, dining and recreational activities - all within reach. Both Iowa City and Cedar Rapids are just 30 miles from Marengo.
Incorporated in July 1859, Marengo has served as the county seat of Iowa County since August 1845. The city was named due to its resemblance to a plain in Italy where Napoleon fought and won the Battle of Marengo in 1800. For many years, Marengo was the commercial center of Iowa County due to its proximity to the Iowa River, which forms the northern boundary of the city.
Marengo offers a newly expanded full service hospital, sheriff's office, county courthouse and a variety of county offices. Home of the Iowa Valley Tigers, the Iowa Valley Community School includes grades K-12, all located here in Marengo. Feel free to visit www.marengoiowa.com for more about our town.
